It might not look like it on the Front Range, but snowshoe season is here. So if you haven’t broken in your equipment (or your legs) just yet, we suggest a trip up Rabbit Ears Pass near Steamboat Springs.
The main five-mile out-and-back trail is a popular early season snowshoe destination due to ease of access and to Steamboat’s dependable snowfall. Unfortunately, it’s also a popular destination for snowmobilers. So we recommend branching off onto one of the non-motorized connecting loops.
The West Summit Loop starts from the West Summit Parking Area. It has a 3.7 mile and 4 mile loop option, both considered moderate. To avoid the difficult climbs, we suggest taking the trail in a clockwise direction.
The Fox Curve Loop begins at the Fox Curve Loop Parking Area on Highway 40. A moderate trail, this difficulty 3-mile loop varies with steep ascents and descents, open meadows, rolling hills, and a crossing of Walton Creek.
If you go: To make the most of your trip, reserve a condo right in the heart of the Yampa Valley through Steamboat Lodging and explore for a few days. You’ll have direct access to even more Steamboat trails right outside the door, and the manager can help you arrange a snowshoe rental if needed.
Getting there: From Steamboat Springs, head east on US 40 for 21 miles. From the town of Kremmling, drive west on US 40 for 30 miles. Multiple parking areas and pullouts give you options on where to start and stop, so take as long as you like, or cut out early and head to Strawberry Hot Springs for a relaxing soak.
