Nestled among the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, only 100 miles north of Vancouver, the resort of Whistler, Canada is the perfect combination of man-made and natural thrills.
Lush green growth dominates in the warmer months, and pristine groomed ski trails are the highlight of the winter. But you don’t have to wait for snow: there’s plenty of things to do in Whistler in the fall. Restaurants, spas and upscale boutiques have turned this charming mountain village into a grand international attraction, but just outside the resort area, you can still find miles and miles of untamed backcountry. Alpine lakes stretch like fingers through red cedar forests, and native wildlife can be viewed from a comfortable seat at the living room window. It’s hard to find a more perfect vacation spot. If you’re lucky enough to be in Whistler during the last few warm weeks of the year, try to fit these thrills into your schedule.
Mountain Biking on Whistler Blackcomb
Hailed by mountain bikers far and wide, Whistler Blackcomb mountain boasts 41 miles (67 kilometers) of down-hill single track. Ride the gondola to the top with your gear and your mates, and come back down through your pick of three distinct zones. Whatever your skill level, there are tracks made just for you. Weave tightly through tree trunks, coast over gently banked turns, race across open fields, or fly over jumps as you descend approximately 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) from the peak to the village. After a run or two, and you will understand why Whistler Blackcomb is often described as having the finest mountain biking in North America.
Bobsledding at the Sliding Center
Whistler was originally given its name because of the whistling call of the native marmots. The thing that makes it unforgettable, though, is the whistling of the wind in your ears as you rocket at 90+ mph down the Bobsleigh track at Whistler’s Sliding Center. (Speeds during the winter can surpass 125 mph!) This new attraction allows you to pile into a bobsled car behind a skilled driver and go for a ride that feels like a ride on a roller coaster fueled by a jet engine. If you’re feeling particularly daring, you can try the Skeleton – flying headfirst down the track is a pure adrenaline rush. If you have the time, get a tour of the facility, which has the reputation of being the fastest bobsled track in the world. This unique opportunity is one not to be missed. You’ll want to ride again and again.
ATV Backcountry Tours
If you want a thrill, with perhaps a bit less risk, sign up for an ATV backcountry tour. Knowledgeable guides take you as fast or as slow as you like over maintained trails through forests and meadows. The ATVs are easy to maneuver and comfortable; even beginners will enjoy the ride. There are both basic tours and more challenging obstacle courses to try as your confidence grows; or you can settle in behind a driver and just enjoy the amazing scenery. If you can, schedule your tour for a clear day to get the best mountain views.
